Trip Tips - Red Rocks

It’s aptly named, there are some freaking red rocks out here.

Red Rocks is one of the biggest attractions in Las Vegas that shows you that there’s SO much more to the town than the strip.

At the time of writing this, I’m one month into living here in Las Vegas from San Diego. I know what you’re thinking: Why did you move Robin? Why would you ever leave San Diego Robin? Is your head okay Robin?

Okay so I moved 50% due to San Diego being not only EXPENSIVE as hell but COMPETITVE as hell and ya boi miiiiight have some bad credit from being fiscally irresponsible at 19… The other 50% is that my day job (I do in-house marketing for brands, like everyone else I meet apparently) was moving to Vegas so it just worked out. Is it hot as balls here? Duh, but 1. Either I’ve already gotten used to it but the heat isn’t all that bad and 2. My house has a pool which is a GODSEND. Also to answer part three of those questions, you should know the answer by now….no.

Back to the trip tips. Red Rocks is what I would call my new La Jolla. It’s so close to my house and just has so many possibilities for shooting. Some of the highlights? Epic sunsets, plenty of room to space out and get your shots, and plenty of exploring to be had. I compare it to La Jolla because, in my head, it’s going to be my new stomping grounds (when its average temp drops below 100 that is).

The first spot to hit? Calico Basin. What is it? The best way I can describe it is a little baby oasis tucked in the afternoon shade of a little mountain. It has the cutest little platform in the meadow as well, so I’m sure it’s a nice spot for some quick engagement photos!

Next stop: Red Rock Scenic Loop. I’ve only had the chance to pass through but this loop offers so many easy spots to park and just walk to some great photo opportunities. Of the time we passed through, we saw two photoshoots with supercars and one adorable elopement session so safe to say this is the SPOT. Once I do a proper shoot here, I’ll update! Note: It’s a state park, so you do have to pay a small entry fee per car.

Last little stop: Red Rock Canyon Overlook. This spot is public so it’s FREE which makes it an easy win to shoot! I would take advantage of the views west and north and shoot on the little wall they have here like I made this little lady do. There is also a Heli Pad which makes a great spot to stage and place people and/or things.

Bonus: Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. A delightful little park with a cute barn, nestled right under the expansive walls of Red Rocks. Just beware of where you park, if you’re in the wrong area, guaranteed that the park rangers here will find you quicker than Liam Neeson in Taken.
