If you’re wondering whether winter couple photos are worth it, the answer is yes.
You’ll just need a jacket and a good attitude.
This shoot with Cody and Alyssa took place just after New Year’s up at South Fork Canyon near Provo, Utah, and let me tell you… it was CHILLY. Not unbearable, but enough cold that your hands stop working properly if you leave them out too long. Worth it though. Always worth it.
A New Spot for Me (Credit Where It’s Due)
This location actually came from Alyssa, which I fully respect because I’m still in my “learning Utah” era. I moved here from Las Vegas about three years ago and while Vegas spoiled me with easy desert access and endless sunsets, Utah is a whole different animal in the best way possible.
South Fork Canyon was one of those spots where you pull up, step out of the car, and immediately think you didnt follow the right directions. Don’t worry, its up the hill once you park in the equestrian parking area!
A wide open grassy field, snow dusted mountain peaks wrapping around your view, and just enough openness to make everything feel big without feeling empty. Simple. Clean. Quiet. My favorite combo.
Timing Is Everything (Apparently)
We caught this spot at a pretty perfect moment. According to Alyssa, this place gets PACKED in the fall and spring when the surrounding hills and peaks start popping off with color. Makes total sense. It’s one of those locations that probably looks completely different depending on the season.
Winter though?
Underrated.
No crowds. Muted colors. Snow on the peaks. A little bite in the air that forces people to stand closer together (nature’s posing hack).
Fun People Make Everything Easier
Cody and Alyssa made this shoot stupid easy. When people actually want to be there, half the work is done for you. No stiff posing, no overthinking, just hanging out and letting moments happen.
Cold shoots can go either way. Sometimes people shut down. Sometimes they lean into it. These two leaned in hard.
Bonus Guest Appearance
At one point during the shoot, an old dog came trotting up to us, did a quick drive-by sniff test like he was on official business, then wandered off like nothing happened.
10 out of 10 cameo. No notes.
Why I’ll Be Back Here
South Fork Canyon is absolutely getting added to my regular rotation. Winter proved it has legs, and I can only imagine how good it looks once fall colors roll in or spring greens take over.
If you’re considering a couple or engagement session in Utah and want something that feels natural, open, and a little adventurous without being a full hike ordeal, this spot checks all the boxes.
Just maybe bring a coat.
